Welcome back to the Spoils of Raw here on STC wrestling, our weekly look at Monday Night Raw, and all the Scores(the good), the Flaws(the bad), and the Snores(the boring).
We’re a bit late getting this thing out this week, and this episode was better than average in general which means we have a lot to cover, so let’s get right down to business
- BRAUN STROWMAN
“Roman Reigns is garbage, and now YOU ARE TOO!” Braun’s work this week was awesome. The audience are behind him so much more after what he did last week, and everything he did last night just solidified that. And how about that match with the Big Show? I don’t remember seeing Show being given a vertical suplex, ever. I’m sure it happened, probably in WCW but it was SO impressive. Not to mention the finish, which we’ll get to.
- HE’S USING HIM LIKE A LAWN DART!
Enzo Amore. Does anyone at the moment take a better bump? The tag match of Enzo and Cass vs The Club was a fairly standard sort of affair, except for the last few minutes. Enzo diving for the hot tag to Cass only to be caught by Karl Anderson was probably the highlight of the match. And the finish, which was a surprise, with Enzo being thrown into the top Turnbuckle and then summarily pinned, was a refreshing way to end a match. Great work.
- CHRIS JERICHO VS SAMOA JOE
What a great opening match. Jericho is incredible. Joe is a monster. They put on a great match that I feel like could have been on pay per view. The finish was a little out of nowhere, mainly I think beacause the crowd wasn’t really invested, but it was the right move. And Jericho, who we know is leaving soon, is doing everything he can do get the younger talent over, which is great.
- THE CRACKS ARE STILL THERE
Matt Hardy. I love the little teases of Broken Matt. It’s subtle enough that people who aren’t aware won’t really pick it up, but for the fans that know, I feel like it’s enough to hold us over until WWE finally decides (or a certain lawsuit is finalised) what to do with the gimmick. For now, yes, it’s cheesy, but it’s DELIGHTFUL.
- JEFF HARDY VS CESARO
Match of the night for me. Jeff is a great singles wrestler (as is Matt) and to see him work with someone as smooth as Cesaro was wonderful. The teased tension that never amounted to anything between all 4 at the end of the match was great. And I definitely got worked with Jeff hobbling around, so hopefully he wasn’t actually hurt. Great match.
- ALEXA BLISS IS A SCAREDY CAT
Alexa Bliss is the right choice to be going for the Women’s title at the moment. She’s a perfect cowardly heel, who can actually fight when she wants something. The 4 way match wasn’t the greatest tonight (mainly because of Nia), but Alexa picking up the win was exactly what should have happened. Nia still looks dangerous, Sasha’s frustration builds, and Alexa gets her shot at Bayley. Perfect.
- KURT ANGLE
Now, I know. I KNOW. I love Kurt Angle. He’s been great these past two weeks. And he was only in one segment tonight, but it just didn’t work for me. Maybe he was nervous, maybe he forgot some of his lines or something, but answering Braun’s “or else” with “or else what?” and then Braun just leaving was confusing and didn’t work. I love Kurt though so hopefully it’s just a one time thing.
- SMACKDOWN ON RAW
What is the point of moving The Miz and Dean Ambrose to Raw, only to start working with each other again? We saw this a few months back on Smackdown. Sure, it was great, but the superstar shakeup was meant to bring new matches and new feuds to us right? So unless this is just to get the Intercontinental Title back to The Miz, then I don’t understand it.
- TJ PERKINS
I don’t even care that they’ve turned him heel. I don’t care about what he can do in the ring. I really don’t care about his entrance. I get bored whenever I see him wrestle. I’m sorry TJ, but you need a new gimmick. Please. And PLEASE… NO MORE DABBING.
- CUT TO THE HARD CAMERA
Whover let that shot during the Women’s 4 way match of Alexa and Nia just crouching outside the ring while Sasha and Mickie wrestled linger for so long needs to be put in the corner. That was terrible. Moreover, why weren’t Nia and Alexa SELLING?? Bad work all round.
- WHERE IS THE TITLE?
Ok, I know that having the Universal Championship on Brock Lesnar legitimises the belt, but not seeing the belt on the show, kind of does the opposite. And not having said belt defended on a Raw exclusive pay per view really does the opposite. At one point Cole said he sees Balor having the title again soon, which is great. But how can he get there if it’s only appearing for the big shows?
- THE CRUISERWEIGHTS
Unfortunately this week, mainly because of TJP and my arguments in the FLAWS section, I found the cruiserweight match this week quite boring. I love Gallagher, and I like that we saw Aries and Neville, but the match just fell flat.
- APOLLO CREWS
Somebody please give this guy a personality. “I smile and I’m going to be a dad” is not a character. And having him appear with Titus, wow. Not a good start.
- CURT HAWKINS
I feel like this match was there to keep Finn safe while he recovers from his concussion. Which is awesome, because we still get to see him on TV, but did it have to be against Curt Hawkins? Hawkins could be good, if he wasn’t just constantly given the spot to be beaten down and look stupid. This fell flat to me.
And there we have it folks, The Spoils of Raw No.2.
What did you think? Do you agree? Disagree? Let me know in the comments.
See you tomorrow for Smackdown!
